Today we commemorate the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. In New York, the Freedom Tower, built to replace the World Trade Towers is nearing completion. All over the country people will congregate to remember those who lost their lives over the horrific terrorist attacks that were brought to our shores a dozen year ago. Since those attacks we have become a security obsessed nation with more and more cameras and more and more check points and more and more oversight of what each of us do on a day to day basis.

Over the spring and summer, we became aware of some of the things our government has done to try and keep us safe, that has cross the lines in respect of our individual privacy and liberties. Where we go from here as a country is up to all of us, however, this is one of the rare times we pontificate on political matters and hope that enough of us will speak up and congress will curtail the seemingly limitless invasion of our private communications by the NSA. We believe there needs to be a balance between the freedoms we all hold dear and the security we seemingly demand. The two do not go hand in hand. There will always be a battle between the two. Those who say security at all costs, don’t really believe it. If they did, we would be taking away guns from all our citizens. Thankfully, most of us seek a balance. It is our opinion however that over the last few years the pendulum has moved too far into personal intrusion without checks and balances that prevent abuse. Regardless of what party is in power, the freedoms we have all enjoyed need to be constantly protected and we hope responsible persons in both parties will put some controls over what seems to be a growing police state.
