A lot of things should scare you, including how dysfunctional Washington has become (regardless of your political affiliation). The following infographic should truly scare you however. The consolidation of mainstream American media is a tragedy for this country. There was a time we complained about how less than a hundred companies owned so much of what we read, listened to, and watched. That number has dwindled precipitously to well under 10. Anyone willing to bet that number will be even smaller in a decade?

We are reading our daily newspaper in ever decreasing numbers and those papers that are strong seem to be part of some national chain. The local news we once watched is now controlled by huge corporations who see the product as a revenue source where they once looked at the news as a public service. Even the radio we listen to is controlled by a handful of companies who test every tune before it ever hits the airwaves. The diversity that made America great and gave us the notion that compromise is noble is being replaced by huge corporations telling us how to think and even stressing that compromise is a dirty word. This was all done through the guise of diversity and providing choice, with members of Congress, who changed ownership rules that once prohibited such consolidation.

This infographic from FrugalDad isn’t new, in fact, some media ownership changes have taken place, however it hasn’t lost its power as we enter the summer of a very important election.
