Just a few weeks ago, thousands of sites including this one protested pending legislation that could have put quite a dent into the free and open sharing of ideas online. Taken to the extreme, this legislation could have shut down such popular sites as Facebook and Youtube for allowing users to share even the smallest photos, sounds, or snippets of copywritten material. For those of you who wrote or called their Representative, thank you. This issue is not dead. Both bills are being tweaked, and we hope both will go through a drastic overhaul before passage. Here is an interesting infographic from condor consulting giving many of us a clearer picture of the pros and cons of this legislation. On another note there is an international agreement almost as draconian that the US has signed, but not yet ratified call ACTA or Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. This agreement needs to be rejected as well, as it goes too far in supporting content creators at the cost of individual rights to privacy.
