Remember the scene in the Steve Martin movie, The Jerk, where he was so excited the new phone book was delivered and his name was in it? If you’ve not seen it, catch it the next time it comes on cable, the movie is quite funny. As comedy often imitates and makes fun of real life, that particular joke wouldn’t work anywhere near as much today. The phone book is a shadow of its former self and is going the way of the dodo bird. We want content that is fresh…not a month old, and certainly not almost a year old. At our home the phone book goes directly from the porch (when it is actually delivered) straight to the recycling bin. There is no need for a phone book in our home. We have the internet.
This infographic from whitepages.com helps us understand where we look up our information and what a dinosaur the printed phone book has become.
