Remember when Instant Messaging was about the coolest thing on the internet? It seemed like magic that you could have a real time text conversation with someone across the office or around the world. We were just discussing yesterday how little we seem to use Instant Messaging anymore. Perhaps because IM has been so closely connected with those 1.0 web services that seem to be dying a slow death like AOL,Yahoo or MSN. While we would love to have any of their accounts receivable, they are certainly all shadows of their former selves. Microsoft apparently was wondering as well what forms of communications people were using in the office and conducted a study with Market Tools to find out. As the accompanying graphic illustrates, every form of digital communication seems to be increasing, except the Instant Message, which appears to be on the decline elsewhere than just here. Is it because every service had their own proprietary program? What do you think? Do you use Instant Messaging in the office? More? Less?
