Anyone with teens know they send periodic text messages on their cell phones. Periodic? YIKES! The Neilsen Company recently released some great data on who does what with their cell phones. The average 13 – 17 year old teen send and receive an average of 3,705 texts per month, more than double the next age group of 18-24. Of course, once you have wheels, you have less need to communicate over the airwaves and more resources to do so in person. Text messaging numbers fall for each successive age group as we move up the age brackets, with mobile phone users 65 and up averaging 41 text messages per month.
Not to reinforce an old stereotype (but we will), women talk and text more than men. How much more? Women both talk
and text almost 30% more than men according to this survey. Women talk 818 minutes on average to men at 640 minutes. Women send 716 texts per month compared to men’s 555.
While average cell phone minutes have remained stable over the last few years, SMS text messaging has grown dramatically.
