We’ve all heard the stories of those who have lost jobs due to their posts or rants on Facebook. We’ve heard the stories of divorces from spouses being contacted by former boyfriends or girlfriends. We’ve also heard or read of the horrific murders related to Facebook posts. This is not a piece devoted to the ‘evils’ of Facebook. Anywhere you congregate thousands of people, something bad is bound to happen. Facebook is now reported to have close to 600 million members, so we can certainly make the assumption that Facebook has a relative share of society’s less than desirables.

These days it seems like Facebook accounts are like opinions in a bar….everyone has one. In point of fact, 75% of Americans have one (a Facebook account that is) and globally one out of every thirteen people do.  We are as a nation and as a global community somewhat addicted to Facebook…some more than others of course…but that is the nature of anything addictive. Some are able to manage it, some not.  Here is a wonderful infographic put together by the people at Mashable sharing some of facts about how deeply we’ve integrated Facebook into our day to day lives.

As marketers there is great information to be gleaned from this data about how the world is changing and where people go for information.

What is your level of Facebook participation or addiction?
